The History of the Classic Manhattan Cocktail
The Manhattan cocktail has been around for generations.
Legend has it that the drink was first served at the Manhattan Club in New York City in the early 1870s. It was reportedly served at a banquet hosted by Winston Churchill’s mother for then-presidential candidate Samuel J. Tilden.
Rumor has it that the drink became so popular that people started requesting it and calling it the name of the establishment that served it: Manhattan. The fact that Mrs Churchill was actually pregnant and in France makes the story suspicious, but still…it’s still a story about the notorious drink.
The drink was most likely invented by a New York City bartender in the 1800s and is named for its city of origin.
